My experience with Lambeth Council has been absolutely appalling. The way I have been treated throughout my housing situation has left me feeling completely let down, stressed and genuinely distressed. I am currently living at 90 Camberwell Foyer, Denmark Hill, London SE5 8RX, and the way this situation has been handled by Lambeth Council and the building management has been extremely poor. Today I am being told that I have to leave the building, despite originally being told that I was supposed to leave last Monday. I was made to pack my belongings for no reason, only for the situation to change again. I am already struggling financially and I am not in a position to simply move everything at such short notice. I need assistance from my cousin, who does not finish work until after 6pm today, yet there appears to be very little understanding or empathy for my circumstances. What has made this even worse is the way I have been spoken to by the building manager, Heather. I have found her attitude extremely unpleasant and confrontational. On one occasion, she spoke to me in a way that caused me to break down in tears while my 10-year-old son was standing there witnessing the whole thing. That is something I will never forget. I was also put under enormous pressure regarding the West Croydon property. I was threatened with homelessness if I did not accept the offer by 4pm that day. I repeatedly explained that the location would have a serious impact on my ability to work because I work in Tower Hamlets in East London. I also have to manage my son’s daily school runs, and moving him that far away would create significant difficulties with getting him to and from school. I have no family members or close friends near that proposed location who can help me with my son while I am at work. This is a very important part of my circumstances that I explained to Lambeth. I cannot simply move to an area where I have no support network and somehow be expected to manage full-time work, school runs and caring responsibilities without anyone nearby to help. Now, because of this proposed move, I am potentially having to change my son’s school yet again, despite the disruption he has already experienced to his education. I have also explained that the location would affect our access to doctors and the support network we currently rely on. I also raised genuine concerns about the suitability and safety of the area for my son. I have personally experienced crime in Croydon in the past, so my concerns about the location are not something I have simply invented or taken lightly. Instead of showing understanding towards a parent trying to protect his child while maintaining employment and stability, I felt as though my concerns were simply dismissed. What is particularly frustrating is that Lambeth Council expects residents to be organised and have everything in order, yet the way my situation has been handled has been anything but organised. I have been left confused, stressed, financially pressured and constantly having to chase information while arrangements keep changing. This is supposed to be a council service supporting people who are already going through difficult circumstances. Instead, my experience has been one of pressure, poor communication, lack of empathy and being made to feel like a problem rather than a person. I am not asking for special treatment. I am asking for basic communication, compassion, professionalism and respect. Lambeth Council needs to seriously improve the way it treats residents, particularly families and people experiencing difficult housing circumstances. I believe the management of 90 Camberwell Foyer and the conduct of the staff involved in my case deserve proper investigation. A council should be helping families achieve stability — not creating even more instability for parents and children who are already struggling.
